Dating back to 1842, this fort was originally called Camp Scott in honor of General Winfield Scott. It was restored to a historic site and is believed to be quite haunted. Soldier and officer ghosts are said to linger here and have been spotted on the lawn, in the courtyard and in the cell blocks and stables. They've been known to have conversation with visitors, who thought the ghosts were guides dressed in period clothing. An officer was said to have accidentally shot himself in the Officers' Quarters while showing off for his wife, and her ghost has been seen here as well, looking distressed. Foggy apparitions have also been reported to come out of the chimney, and orphan children have been heard in the Free State Hotel, which was once an orphanage.

I was in the building where the officer shot himself outside...... I was inside talking about it and as I walked down the stairs someone not there followed me down the stairs..... I spoke to a worker there and they said that type of stuff happened all the time!

Few years ago, I got the opportunity to do several investigations in Ft. Scott, KS. One of them, was the Chamber of Commerce, next to the fort property. The fort would not let us investigate any of the buildings, nor the grounds. Strictly prohibited by the US Govt. Our investigation at the Chamber was inconclusive. We also did a private residence that was very, very active and we ended there a few more times. Once we did the Scottish Rite Temple as well. This town is full of amazing history, beautiful Victorian homes, brick roads, 1st National Cemetery which has both Union & Confederate soldiers buried there. **remember, no trespassing on the fort property. Never investigate with out permission, respect.
